SCHOOL PROFESSOR NEIL B. COHEN NAMED JEFFREY D. FORCHELLI
PROFESSOR OF LAW
Mineola, November 06, 2003 — Brooklyn Law School Dean
Joan G. Wexler has announced the appointment of Professor
Neil B. Cohen as the first Jeffrey D. Forchelli Professor
of Law. A member of the faculty since 1985, Professor Cohen
is a widely recognized expert in domestic and international
commercial law.
Professor Cohen has held several influential appointments
in recent years in the field of commercial law. He was the
Reporter for the American Law Institute’s Restatement
of the Law of Suretyship and Guaranty, and for his work
he was named ALI’s R. Ammi Cutter Reporter. He was
also the Reporter for Revised Article 1 of the Uniform Commercial
Code (a joint project of the ALI and the National Conference
of Commissioners on Uniform State Law) and a member of the
Drafting Committees that revised Articles 2 and 2A of the
UCC and Article 9. He chaired that Committee’s Task
Force on International Secured Transactions and he now serves
as the Director of Research of the Permanent Editorial Board
for the Uniform Commercial Code.
Professor Cohen served as a member of the United States
delegation to the United Nations Commission on International
Trade Law (UNCITRAL) in conjunction with its preparation
of the United Nations Convention on the Assignment of Receivables
in International Trade, and he now serves as a member of
the delegation to the UNCITRAL Working Group for its broader
work regarding secured credit. He has also served as a special
consultant to the New York Law Revision Commission regarding
UCC Articles 2A, 3, and 4; as a consultant to the Center
for Economic Analysis of Law; and as a participating scholar
for the Commercial Law Project for Ukraine. He is a regent
of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers.
Professor Cohen has written numerous law review articles
in areas as diverse as commercial law, bankruptcy, medical
malpractice, and probability and statistics. He is co-author
of the monthly Commercial Law Report and a bi-monthly commercial
law column for the New York Law Journal, and he is a frequent
lecturer on commercial law issues. He is the co-author of
What if the American Political System Were Different? (1992),
and co-editor of Baseball and the American Legal Mind (1995).
Jeffrey D. Forchelli, a graduate of Brooklyn Law School,
Class of 1969, has endowed the Jeffrey D. Forchelli Professor
of Law chair. In 1976 he founded the Mineola, New York firm
of Forchelli, Curto, Schwartz, Mineo, Carlino & Cohn,
LLP, and he serves as its managing partner. He concentrates
his practice on complex real estate and land use matters,
including litigation, and tax certiorari, for major real
estate developers and national corporations. He has served
as counsel to the New York State Assembly, as a member of
the Legal Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of Security
Title and Guaranty Company. Mr. Forchelli was included in
“Who's Who in American Law” (8th Edition 1994-95)
and “Who's Who in Law” by Long Island Business
News (September 2002). He is a member of the New York State
Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, and
a fellow of the New York Bar Foundation.
