Partner Terence
E. Smolev Publish Article in Latest Issue New York Law Journal
"Providing for Care of Pets; Trusts Specify Feeding,
Shelter, and Management of Money"
Mineola, September 13, 2004 — Terence E. Smolev, partner-in-charge
of the firms Tax, Trusts, and Estates Division, has published
an article in the latest issue of the New York Law Journal.
Discussing provisional care for pets at the time of death,
Smolev explains "Since the trust is enforceable by
statute, the client should pick a trustee who will be willing
to enforce the trust provisions. For example, a client can
create a trust for the care of a pet with $20,000 in assets.
The trustee should be a person, such as a family member
or friend, who is adept in animal care. He would then be
in possession of that $20,000 and also be able to enforce
the trust provisions if need be. ”
